I'm not sure what there is to teach. Emoticons are used to demonstrate emotion and clarify text.

'I'm going to see Garrus. :)' VS 'I'm going to see Garrus. :('

The first expresses happiness at seeing Garrus, the second unhappiness. The colon is the eyes and the parentheses is the mouth. Do you follow?
